LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Colorado State softball team finished the Kansas series with a dominate 14-6 win on Saturday afternoon in six innings to win the series. CSU took game one 8-6 in 12 innings on Saturday night. The series win is the second of the season for the Rams.
The Rams are now 10-2 on the year when scoring in the first inning. Saturday was more of the same as Corina Gamboa started things with her seventh homer of the season in the top of the first to give the Rams an early 2-0 lead.
Kansas responded in the bottom half after a CSU error scored a run and a double scored two more to give the Jayhawks a 3-2 advantage.
CSU didn't trail for long as it came back with two runs of its own in the second frame after Sarah Muzik knocked a single through the right side to score a pair and give the Rams a 4-3 lead. Colorado State added another run in the top of the third off a single from Nicole Valdez – her first hit of the season.
KU cut into the Rams lead with an RBI double to right to make the score 5-4 in favor of CSU.
Colorado State opened the scoring up in the fifth with four runs. Hannah McCorkhill and Danni Klein started the inning scoring on a passed ball. Ashley Michelena followed with a triple to center – her fourth of the season to score Valdez. The Rams capped the big inning with Buchanan doubling down the right-field line to score the last run and give CSU a 9-4 lead.
Kansas scored two easy runs in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases and earning back-to-back walks to score two runs.
Once again, the Rams erupted in the sixth inning after Valdez started things with a fielder's choice to third, which scored Klein. The bases were loaded before Muzik hit a high fly ball to center field which dropped for an error and cleared the bases. Buchanan followed with a base hit through the right side for an RBI to give the Rams a 14-6 lead heading to the final outs due to the run rule.
Colorado State made quick work of KU in the sixth, putting the Jayhawks down in order on three groundouts to secure the series win.
STATS OF THE DAY
CSU's pitching staff was dialed in as Kaylynn Pierce and Alison Petty combined for three earned runs and three strikeouts.
