Rams ramp up physicality in first day in shoulder pads

The Colorado State Rams put on shoulder pads for the first time as they held their third practice of fall camp on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Mike Bobo and his staff continue to add more scenarios and situational drills into practice, and Bobo said the offense has room to improve, but he appreciates his team's approach.

"We mixed in a little third-down work today and got some different looks from the defense," Bobo stated. "When you're not really scheming things up on how to attack things it causes a little bit of a headache sometimes for the offense. The quarterbacks' heads were spinning and they made a few mistakes today... mistakes in the protection, and most of that is on the quarterback and we have to get that right.

"I told the team after practice today that I like the energy, I like the enthusiasm, I like the competitiveness all practice," Bobo added.

The team introduced "board drills" for the first time this fall. The one-on-one competition usually takes place at the beginning of practice and tends to light a fire under the team. Several newcomers participated today, and Bobo was impressed by their competitiveness. The Phillips brothers, Joctavis and Devin, were pitted against each other, and the other three matchups were Trey McBride vs. Dequan Jackson, Quinn Brinnon vs. Nikko Hall and Cam'ron Carter vs. Gary Williams.

"Nobody was afraid, which is a good thing to see," Bobo said. "Sometimes one of them got the better of the other, but they all put a their face on each other which was good to see."

Junior Braylin Scott made some standout plays on Sunday, including a pair of interceptions after making terrific reads from his post in the secondary.

"(He) was playing in the deep safety in single-high coverage, (and) twice made good breaks on balls," Bobo explained. "We have two great receivers on the outside running nine-routes and (Scott) made two great breaks and two great interceptions, which was good to see."

Bobo also acknowledged that three days into camp the team is making plenty of mistakes, but the squad is learning and developing everyday.

"We are going to come back tomorrow and install some more stuff," Bobo said. "We will make a few more mistakes, and we will try to hone out the mistakes. I want to see guys play fast, I want to see guys play physical, I want to see guys having fun. I'm seeing that and we will get into schemes as we go on later."

The Rams will wear shoulder pads again tomorrow before wearing full pads for the first time on Tuesday.
