Rams’ men match highest finish in the 10-year history of the meet; Rams’ women topple No. 27 Georgetown, Texas (RV) en route to 21st-place finish
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 10 Colorado State men's cross country team placed sixth of 33 teams to match its highest all-time team finish at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, while CSU's women finished 21st on Friday from the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
The 10th-ranked Rams were paced by senior Cole Rockhold (23:29.3), who turned in a ninth-place finish (of 224 runners), the highest by any Ram individually in the men's 8k in the 10-year history of the meet. Fellow senior Eric Hamer clocked a time of 23:42.5 to place 22nd, the third-highest all-time by any Ram at the meet. All five CSU scorers placed in the top 100, including senior Carson Hume (60th, 24:05.3), senior Trent Powell (78th, 24:18.2) and sophomore Jacob Brueckman (92nd, 24:24.6). CSU finished ahead of 11 ranked teams, and bested its projected finish in terms of USTFCCCA ranking. The Rams entered as the coaches' association's seventh-highest ranked team competing at this meet.
Colorado State placed 21st of 33 teams in competition in the women's championship 6k, finishing ahead of No. 27 Georgetown, Texas (receiving votes) and five other power conference programs. Leading the Rams in that field, which featured 15 ranked teams, was senior Bailey Ness (20:58.8), who was 73rd of 227 runners. Senior Ali Kallner joined Ness in the top 100, stopping the clock in 21:10.4 to take 94th place. The Rams' three remaining scorers included senior Roxy Trotter (114th, 21:22.3), freshman Lily Tomasula-Martin (124th, 21:27.6) and freshman Ivy Gonzales (166th, 21:56.0).
Rounding out the top seven for CSU on the men's side were juniors Satchel Caldwell (24:25.6) and Forrest Barton (24:29.5), who placed 93rd and 104th, respectively. The Rams' sixth and seventh finishers in women's competition were and junior Jenna Anderson (171st, 22:00.7) and freshman Jenna Diers (212th, 22:52.1), respectively.
In "B" race competition, sophomore Andrew Forsyth (25:02.5) paced the Rams with a 24th-place finish of 91 men's 8k runners and an eighth-place finish among underclassmen. Freshman Maximilliano Martinez posted an 8k time of 25:12.5 to place 33rd overall and an eighth among freshmen in his first official collegiate cross country race. Junior Vinny Del Conte (25:37.3) finished in 50th place, while junior Eli Oftedal (26:33.9) placed 81st.
In action from the women's "B" race, Macy Kreutz placed 63rd of 114 with a 6k time of 22:30.4. Freshman Stephanie Carrasco finished shortly behind her, clocking a time of 22:39.5 to take 71st place overall and 23rd place among all freshmen.
STAT OF THE MEET
The Colorado State men's cross country team also placed sixth at last year's Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, which is generally considered a barometer of future success at that season's NCAA Cross Country Championships. The 2017 Rams went on to place ninth at nationals, marking the program's best finish since 1978 and one of 10 top-10 national finishes by any team in the history of CSU Athletics.
IN THEIR WORDS
Colorado State cross country head coach Art Siemers
"After graduating some of our All-Americans ike Jerrell Mock and Grant Fischer, we wanted to come out here and prove that we were still a top-10-caliber team. We did that, and I think if we keep working hard we have a lot more we can improve on given that it's still early in the season. Overall, I thought that we had a strong top seven on the men's side and put ourselves in a good position for NCAAs by getting the Kolas points we needed early in the season. On the women's side, we had pretty much a new team on the starting line and improved from last year. We got some valuable experience, and I think we're not too far from putting it together in a future race."
