SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The championship season continues for the Colorado State cross country teams as they will compete in the NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championships Friday at Rose Park Golf Course on the campus of Utah.
It will have been exactly two weeks since the Rams put together a strong performance on the men's and women's side of the Mountain West Championships. The MW pre-championship poll had both the men's and women's squads pinned to finish fifth in the conference, but the men took second and the women fourth.
Throughout the season, the Mountain Region has contained the monopoly in terms of number of ranked teams in the USTFCCCA rankings. Now back at No. 25, the CSU men represent the fifth-highest ranked team in the top-30 amongst the region. Leading the pack is the nation's top three teams in Northern Arizona, BYU and Colorado in ascending order. Utah State is at No. 20 ahead of the Rams.
The same came be said about the women's field which consists of six teams in the top 20. The Cougars of BYU are No. 3 nationally and then there's the group of Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico that round out the back of the top 10, respectively. Air Force and Northern Arizona complete the region's contingents in the rankings at No. 15 and No. 16.
Race Times
Women's 6K – 11:00 a.m.
Men's 10K – 12:00 p.m.

On how to advance to the NCAA Championships…
"We have a fairly young team this year on the men's side and we didn't put ourselves in the best spot by only gaining one point in the season. The great news is there are two ways to qualify for the NCAA Championships. One is a top two regional finish. The second is after the 18 at-large qualifiers, the next bids are based on who has the most points and the order of finish at the regional. Although we don't have enough points, if we have a great regional performance and you beat a team that does have enough points then you can get pushed into the NCAA Championships.
On the men's side…
"We had a great race at conference and showed the potential that we had all year. The next step we have to do is probably beat Utah State. They are ranked fourth in the region and if we can beat them than we could get pushed into the NCAA Championships."
On the women's side…
"It's virtually the same thing, but the women's field is even stronger. There are six teams that are top 20 and all six have enough points to get into the NCAA Championships. What we have to do is upset one of those team in order to get the push into NCAAs. It is a tall order, but we are going to go out there and run like we have nothing to lose. We ran close to our best at conference. We didn't have all five at their best, but we can get that this Friday then we can close the gap. This region is stacked and there is no room for errors."
Rams Competing
Men's Race: Forrest Barton, Satchel Caldwell, Jacob Brueckman, Maximilliano Martinez, Michael Mooney, Brock Dykema, Matt Begeman
Women's Race: Lily Tomasula-Martin, Ashlyn Hillyard, Devon Peterson, Sarah Carter, Emma Atwell, Claudia Burgess, Lauren Offerman
