Season Underway with a Win
CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Placing five runners in the top-15, the Colorado State women's cross country team took first place at the Wyoming Invite Friday evening at the Little America Golf Course.
In the 5,000-meter season-opening race, Lily Tomasula-Martin, a redshirt-sophomore, paced the Rams with a new career-best time of 18 minutes, and 11.2 seconds for fifth place overall. On her heels was sophomore Ivy Gonzales in sixth overall at 18:11.8.
To round out the scoring, Emma Atwell, Ashlyn Hillyard, and Sarah Carter crossed in a pack at 10th, 11th, and 12th, respectively. Hillyard, a freshman from Plano, Texas, made an immediate impact for the Rams as did Carter, a transfer from Washington. Atwell, the longest tenured Ram, put in her career-best 5K time at 18:32.3.
The men's race followed with No. 17-ranked Colorado State taking third-place, highlighted by redshirt-senior Forrest Barton's second-place finish. Against stiff competition, the Rams at 56 team points trailed No. 4 Colorado by five points and first-place Wyoming, ranked No. 16 nationally, by nine points.
Barton, of Castle Rock, Colo., registered a new career-high 5K time of 15:12.7 to lead CSU's seven top-25 runners. In his cross country debut, redshirt-freshman Brock Dykema placed 11th at 15:27.9, while redshirt-senior Satchel Caldwell followed in 13th place.
Unattached Noah Bodewes, a freshman from Durango, Colo., put a 18th-place finish before juniors Matt Begeman and Jacob Brueckman rounded out CSU's scorer's in 21st and 23rd.

On the women's performance…
"The women ran so well together in a pack, which is something that we have been working on and haven't really had in the past. We've practiced it a lot, but it is really nice to come out here and replicate it. We are in a good place in the women's side with solid transfers and freshmen in Ashlyn [Hillyard]. She was really aggressive today, and took the lead a little too early being a sea-level Texas runner, but it's a learning experience and she still finished strong. Overall, I think it was a great start for our team."
On the men's outing and Forrest Barton's run…
"We knew Forrest [Barton] was going to do well today. He has really been the rock of our team. He is our top returner from last year. We had too big of a spread today and we had a few runners out that could step into our top-5, but they might be a little tired. We have been training hard and it is early in the season, so we'll have our chances with a full team in South Bend [Indiana] for our next meet. Overall, I saw some good things, but we were tired. Our true freshman also looked really good unattached."

The Rams have four weeks, Oct. 4, until their next competition, the Joe Piane Invitational, in South Bend, Ind., giving ample time to work and improve.
