Possible First Ever Petersen, Peterson Finish in Cross Country History

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Alphabetical order on the roster and numerical on the results it was for Sydney Petersen and Devon Peterson Friday at the UCCS Open at the Cherokee Ridge Golf Course.

The Ram duo finished in first and second place to lead the Colorado State women's cross country team that put five runners in the top 10 and all six competing Rams in the top 15. Air Force and Wyoming were the only other teams that had multiple finishers in the top 15, which was two apiece. Petersen, a redshirt-junior from Crested Butte, Colo., crossed 24 seconds before Peterson and when the fifth Ram, Jenna Diers, finished it made a pack split of 1:46 for the 6,000-meter race.

No team scores were recorded, but the competing teams included CSU, Metro State, UCCS, Regis, Colorado College, St. Mary (Neb.), Colorado School of Mines, Wyoming, Colorado Mountain College, and Air Force.

After the ladies, the men took to the course with more of a challenge as Air Force and Mines – the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II – had more of their roster in the race. Out of the 82 runners, the men placed eight in the top 35 and five in the top 20. Maximilliano Martinez led the Rams when he crossed at 25:51.6 for fourth and Noah Bodewes' 17th-place finish capped the first five Rams for a 44-second split.

ART'S THOUGHTS
Head Coach Art Siemers
On the women…
"They raced really well considering the course was pretty tough with it being a golf course. It makes for soft footing and the altitude is a factor. However, the ladies were very poised and went out conservative, putting together an overall strong race. Both Sydney [Petersen] and Devon [Peterson] rebounded well from their last races, because they both struggled in the second half of their previous in Oregon and Metro, respectively. It was cool to see them not only respond but finish 1-2."

On the men…
"The men's race was more competitive with Air Force and Mines ran more of their roster and both have really strong teams with plenty of depth. It certainly gave our guys something to work for. Max [Martinez] improved from his Oregon run, Chris [Montross] is getting stronger at 8K, and Cal [Banta] had a great race since his Metro showing. This group is moving in the right direction."
