Rams Race Thursday Evening in the Bill Dellinger Invitational
FORT COLLINS – Embarking on its first plane trip of the season, the Colorado State cross country programs set out Wednesday for what seems like the season's first quiz – the Bill Dellinger Invitational – set for Thursday in Springfield, Ore. at the Pine Ridge Golf Course.
In total, there are 14 teams in competition that are either ranked or receiving votes. The men will hear the starting pistol at 7 p.m. MT for their 8,000-meter race with the women, ranked No. 25 nationally in the USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll, to follow at 7:40 p.m. in their 6K contest.
"The meet is set up well for our development," head cross country coach Art Siemers said. "There are some good teams and nationally-ranked teams, but the field size is very manageable. It's nice early in the season when you don't have as much race experience to have a race where the start matters, but you can still move up throughout. Our women raced very well last year in the big invitationals and with everybody back, we think we have enough experience to replicate and improve to surprise a few people. The men improved a lot in the track season after the spring cross country season and matured well to the point that we will be a nationally competitive team. This will be the test if that is true."
On the men's side, host Oregon, ranked seventh, leads the 15-team field with #19 Portland and #25 Gonzaga also holding rankings. Mountain West foes Air Force and Boise State are the receiving-vote squads that look to legitimize its balloters.
The women face a much tougher lineup of competitors with four other ranked teams and another four receiving votes. Directly ahead of the #25 Rams are #24 Oregon and #23 Oregon State with the in-conference Broncos around the corner at No. 17. To further display the talent present, the fourth-ranked team Arkansas will be running and are coming off the track season in which they helped win the 2021 NCAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship for the Razorbacks.
Both CSU squads, racing its varsity crew, won the Wyoming Invite three weeks ago in the season opener. Only one Ram that competed last week at the Roadrunners Open will be traveling to Eugene, leaving the rest of the group well rested for the meet.
"When we put together our schedule, we wanted to have two really strong invitationals where we could see different teams throughout the country to help our resume for nationals," Siemers continued. "Our region is so strong and neither of our teams are projected to be in the top-two spots, so you really need to get points at these bigger meets. This will give us a barometer of where we are at against top competition, because in three weeks we'll be going to the biggest meet in the country at Wisconsin."
Based on the competition, the results can swing teams to legitimacy or put them on the outskirts, needing another good showing later in the season. Either way, for the Rams that second quiz before the championship tests will be the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 15, but unlike Thursday's Oregon meet, it'll have double the number of teams and double the ranked ones too.
Thursday's forecast conditions at the sea-level Pine Ridge Golf Course are a high of 76 with temperatures dropping about 10 degrees during the two races.
