Chaston and Carter led Colorado State with career marks.
MADISON, Wis. – In a field of 72 teams of which 45 of them placed at the 2021 NCAA Championships, the Colorado State cross country teams had a tough road test at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invite on Friday. The Rams finished the day with the women crossing in 17th place and the men at 18th. CSU also had a handful of individuals running the "B" races.
Â
"We got the day started off well with our athletes in the Open (B) races," said Head Coach Andrew Epperson. "I was really proud of how Lauren, Claudia, and Sydney raced in the women's race and Jared and Max in the men's race."
Â
Lauren Neugeboren and Claudia Bergess both cross in the Top 10 in the "B" races, posting times of 21:07.08 and 21:09.3, respectfully. Sydney Petersen finished in 22:11.7 for a 62nd spot. On the men's side, Jared Putney led the squad in the "B" race crossing 48th with a time of 24:44.4 followed by Cal Banta at 24:56.
Â
In the "A" races, the women finished 17th with 518 points and beat six ranked, including four that were ranked higher. The Rams were 18 points shy of finishing in 12th.
Â
"In the A race, the women were 18 points away from having a great day," said Epperson. "They didn't get the best start but responded well and moved up in the middle of the race. Unfortunately, they weren't able to hold their move but we are moving in the right direction. Especially given the talent and depth of the field."
Â
The women were led by Sarah Carter who crossed 62nd at a career time of 20:30 and followed by Lily Tomasula-Martin at 73rd and 20:40.5.
Â
The men placed 18th out of the 33-team field with 475 points, but also beat three teams ranked in the last poll.
Â
"The men continue to get better and improve," said Epperson. "Their pack split was better than our last meet and our men who needed to step up - Mason and Brock - did so."
Â
Thomas Chaston led the Rams with a 61st place finish and a 23:50.5 mark – a career best. Mason Brown followed in 80th and a 23:57.6 time.
Â
Colorado State will have one more race before the Mountain West Championship, as Colorado Springs XC Open takes place next Friday.
Â
"Very encouraging overall and we are looking forward to getting in more training before the Mountain West Championships," said Epperson.
