Rams Have Career Day at Mountain West Championship

Colorado State finished second on both the women and men, while earning eight All-Mountain West honors
LARAMIE, Wyo. – It was a career day for the Colorado State cross country team with eight personal records set on the women side and three on the men as the squads finished second in both races at the Mountain West Championships on Friday morning.

The top 14 in each race earned All-Mountain West honors, making three on the women's team with Lily Tomasula-Martin, Annabel Stafford and Sarah Carter. On the men's side, it was six with Thomas Chaston, Mason Brown, Brock Dykema, Lars Mitchel, Michael Mooney and Tom Oates.

"It was a great day to be a Ram and I'm proud of how both teams ran and competed today," head coach Andrew Epperson said of the performance. "The Wyoming and Mountain West staff put a championship event together and it was a beautiful day."

Tomasula-Martin paced the Rams in the women's 6k race, moving up two spots in the last section to finish eighth with a time of 20:09.6. Annabel Stafford followed close behind at 20:10.7 and a ninth-place mark. Sarah Carter was just behind crossing in 11th place at a time of 20:16.2. The trio of all-conference honors was the most for the women since 2012.

"The women started off the championship in strong fashion. Three All-Conference performances from Lily, Annabel, and Sarah with Ashlyn Hillyard and Emily Chaston rounding out top 20 finishes," Epperson added. "The women ran like a strong team today and gained a lot of confidence.They had their best pack split of the season and did a tremendous job finding each other during the race and moving up in positions after the halfway mark."

The men were led by Thomas Chaston, who was leading the pack with 1.5K left before finishing fourth with a career mark of 23:41.6. Brown followed with a seventh-place finish in a time of 23:45.1, which was also a career mark. A group of four Rams followed in 11th-14th place to help Colorado State to a second-place finish. The six men earning conference accolades was a program record.

"The men were inspired and put the best conference performance together in school history," said Epperson. "They battled the entire race and finished with six All-Conference performances; Thomas and Mason earned first-team honors and Brock, Michael and Tom earned second-team."
