A combined six runners place in top 25 of Roy Griak Invitational

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A rainy day in the Twin Cities greeted Colorado State for its second meet of the season, Friday's Roy Griak Invitational. Both squads grabbed fourth-place finishes and had a combined six runners in the top 25, including a pair on the women's side in the Top 10 with Sarah Carter and Lily Tomasula-Martin.

Carter led all Rams on the morning, crossing at 21:06.03 – just two seconds shy of her personal best. Tomasula-Martin followed close behind at 21:11.8 with Annabel Stafford just behind at 21:13.5. Colorado State is ranked No. 14 in this week's USTFCCCA National Poll and finished two spots ahead of No. 13 Wisconsin, as well as three other schools in the Poll - No. 25 Ohio State, No. 26 Iowa State and RV Minnesota. Utah took first, followed by CBU and Michigan State – all three ranked in the Top 25 Poll.

"A pair of fourth-place finishes for the Rams today. It was a strong field for both teams, and we are grateful for the opportunity to compete and represent Colorado State," CSU coach Andrew Epperson said. "Our trio of Carter, Tomasula-Martin and Stafford ran incredibly. We had a larger gap than we were hoping for after three, but our 4-7 runners rallied late and came in together at the finish."

Tom Oates paced the men's squad with a 24:25.7 mark, followed by Thomas Chaston at 24:28.5. Lars Mitchel pushed into the top 25 and shattered his personal best in the 8K, crossing in 24:49.9, nearly two minutes faster than his previous 26:31.6. Ahead of the Rams' fourth-place finish was No. 7 Wisconsin taking first, followed by CBU – which is unranked, and No. 28 Michigan State. The Rams were not ranked this week and also finished ahead of Minnesota, which received votes this week's.

"We had two high-level performances from Tom Oates and Thomas Chaston," Epperson said. "I was also proud of Lars, Dawson, and Michael for being tough in the middle of the race. The men will continue to improve and work towards a tighter pack split.

"The next three weeks will be very important for training and preparing for the Nuttycombe Invitational."

UP NEXT
Colorado State will have three weeks of training before heading to Madison, Wis., for the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Oct. 14 at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
