Colorado State defeats New Mexico 10-1 in five innings
Â
Getting out to an early 3-0 lead after three innings, the Rams got on the board first thanks to back-to-back singles from Danielle Serna and Maya Matsubara to open up the second inning. Morgan Crosby, the pinch runner for Serna, advanced to third on Matsubara's single and then went on to score the first run of the game on a wild pitch.
Â
In the third, senior Peyton Allen started things off with a leadoff double to left field followed by an Ashley York single to put runners on the corners with no outs. York stole second to put two runners in scoring position before Hailey Smith singled to left field to score Allen. In the next at-bat, the Lobos would turn a double play of the bat of Serna, but York was able to score from third base to put the Rams up 3-0.
Â
With an early lead, Colorado State starting pitcher Julia Cabral went back to work in the bottom of the third with only one hit given up so far in the ball game. Fellow senior Jetta Nannen would enter the circle in relief of Cabral in the fourth with Cabral finishing the day allowing zero runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Nannen pitched a scoreless fourth inning before sending things back to her offense at the plate in the fifth.
Â
In a heavy-hitting fifth inning, Peyton Allen once again started things off with a leadoff single before Ashley York reached on a throwing error, advancing Allen to third. A passed ball during the next at-bat scored Allen and moved York into scoring position. Hailey Smith hit her second hit of the day in the next at-bat for the Rams before Serna and Matsubara both reached on walks. Matsubara's drawn walked earned her an RBI, scoring York.
Â
After that, putting the ball in play was all the Rams had to do to keep the runs coming in. Brooke Bohlender scored Smith on a fielder's choice to shortstop before Morgan Coleman grounded out to third base, scoring Serna. A drawn walk by Molly Gates loaded the bases back up for the Rams before Peyton Allen reached on a catcher's interference call to score Matsubara. To finish out the inning, York notched an infield single to score both Gates and Bohlender to give the Rams a 10-0 lead in the fifth.
Â
The Lobos tacked on one run in the fifth, trying to extend the game, but the Rams defense was able to close things out early in Albuquerque.
Â
Overall, eight Rams scored a run in Saturday's win while six tallied at least one hit and four different Rams notched an RBI.
Â
Colorado State will finish its two-game series in Albuquerque Sunday at noon on Mountain West Network.
