Colorado State drops first road contest of the season

GREELEY, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team fell 3-2 to the Northern Colorado Bears Tuesday night at Bank of Colorado Arena. The Rams dropped the first set of the match 25-23 before winning set two, 25-17, and set three 25-19. The Bears rallied back to win the fourth and fifth set 25-23 and 15-11 respectively.

The Rams dropped their first road set of the season 25-23, giving the advantage to Northern Colorado from the jump. Settling into the hostile environment came a little easier in the second set for Colorado State where an 8-1 run led by Malaya Jones behind the service line put the Rams out in front 16-13 before running away with the set to tie things up at one all.

Jones would finish the night with four service aces in a new serving role, adopted this season.

Into the third set, the Rams looked strong, specifically senior outside hitter Kennedy Stanford who finished the night with 16 kills for the Rams. Jumping out to an early 6-1 lead, Stanford had two kills in the early part of the third which forced an early timeout from Northern Colorado. Between Stanford and Jones, who along with her four aces also had 14 kills on the night, Colorado State ran away with the third set to take a 2-1 advantage over the Bears.

Down to its final set, the Northern Colorado crowd came back to life in hopes of derailing the Rams' recent momentum. Similar to the first set, the Rams blocking defense and coverage lacked consistency allowing Northern Colorado to capitalize on a 25-23 fourth set win and force the first five-set match of the season for the Rams.

In the race to 15, both teams traded side-outs back and forth, unable to pull away from one another until two Colorado State attack errors and a Northern Colorado service ace gave the Bears an 8-6 advantage, one they wouldn't give up until winning the final point 15-11.

In the first of four total matches away from Fort Collins this week, Head Coach Emily Kohan spoke post-game to the learning opportunity these road matches pose.

"A sign of a mature, good team is playing well on the road," Kohan said. "This is the best training environment we can ask for. We have the experience and the maturity now, next is just to execute."

Other top stat leaders on the night for Colorado State include Kate Yoshimoto who tallied 10 digs, Emery Herman who finished the night with 48 assists and Karina Leber who totaled seven block assists. Fifth-year senior Annie Sullivan also added a double-digit kill night with 12.

The Rams will continue their week on the road as they travel to Arkansas to face No. 20 Arkansas Friday, Michigan in a neutral site match Saturday and Central Arkansas Sunday.
