Three is the Magic Number

11/2/2024 4:04:00 PM | Volleyball

CSU volleyball has swept its last three games.

A split second is all it takes.

The same formula of receive the volley, assist to the hitter and kill is volleyball at its simplest. But, as Colorado State played San Diego State sweeping them 27-25, 25-21, 25-14, the little moments hailed the most important.

Swift tips over the net and digs 10 feet away define the long game. Getting around the simple formula makes players into winners.

"I think it's knowing that we do (the basics) so well," Malaya Jones said. "So, it's what we can do around that game to make us go up to the top. I think that's what makes us a really good team. It's the little trick plays that they don't usually expect, (it) makes us such a well-rounded team."

Taking yet another win, CSU volleyball's streak compounds to five, with the last three ending in a sweep from the Rams, who are now 14-8 overall, 10-2 in conference play.

Fundamentals set the stage for the Mountain West Volleyball Championship at the end of November, and CSU wants to keep its top spot using a few tricks up its sleeve.

Jordyn Tynsky, a first-year from Texas, continued to be one of the tricks CSU coach Emily Kohan could send out to serve, ending the game with three service aces, breaking her career record.

"Freshmen are fun because they get better and better so fast each week," Kohan said. "We watch Maria (Brun) and Jordyn do that. Jordyn is really infectious with her energy too and it carries over to set three or four."

One way the team looks to improve further is not focusing too much on the looming shadow of the Mountain West Championships, but rather, take it game-by-game, point-by-point.

It could be easy to lose perspective as the team has stayed at the top of volleyball standings for the larger part of the season. However, remembering the title still hangs in the balance and every game still counts keeps players on track.

"I'm a big person of one point at a time," Tynsky said. "Let's get one and then the next type of mindset. I think that if you start focusing too far in advance, that's when you start playing tense. That's why I'm on the bench and the court doing little dances, and I think that's how our team functions too, not just me."

Focusing on each game in its entirety also lends itself to preparing for the games they have yet to win this season.

An opponent like Boise State, which ended in a reverse sweep on Oct. 10, gives a baseline for the team to work off of.

"It's taking all of our past games and collecting the things we need to work on," said Jones, who led the team with 17 kills. "Every practice we're fine tuning those things. We can't let up, even though we're top of conference. Every team has tried to gun for us, and every game is (important)."

This game, and its ups and downs, gives players the confidence that they can get through ties in score and service errors.

Tricking opponents with fake jumps or deceiving sets is the focus of the rest of November. With a defense and offense which continue to improve, a little bit of flair is warranted. Naeemah Weather added 10 kills while hitting .421 and leading the team with four blocks. Emery Herman dished out 35 assists in the match.

"I think we're playing with confidence right now," Kohan said. "We're playing with some inspiration, and we know we want to be conference champion. We go on the road now for four games so it's a little bit harder. And so, that confidence will help a bit, but I think we're playing really good volleyball."

Seconds ticking down is not a part of volleyball in the literal sense, but every second counts in a decision. Decisions which decide who wins and who loses.
