Women win Wyoming Invite for sixth-straight running; men finish second.
FORT COLLINS – Colorado State cross country opened its 2024 season Friday morning at the Wyoming Invite with the Ram women winning the event for a sixth-straight running and the men's team placing second.
Â
"It was a solid start to the season," head coach Kelly Hart said. "The women took care of business with a tight pack, finishing 2-6. The men were a bit shy of our goal, but competed well and closed the race hard. Both the men and women did a great job of running in pairs or groups throughout the race. Looking forward to a great training block before our next meet in Minneapolis."
Â
The Ram women dominated the field in their season debut with their top-five runners each locking up top-six finishes. Quinn McConnell led the way with a time of 17:41.0 – securing herself a second-place finish – and was followed closely behind by Anna Petr (17:48.9, 3rd), and Kenya Dennee (17:51.9, 4th). Freshman Allison Pippert was sensational in her collegiate debut as she ran 17:52.1 to finish fifth, and Kensey May rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Rams with a time of 17:56.2.
Â
For the men, Lars Mitchel led the way with a time of 14:52.9 to finish second overall, while Cory Kennedy (15:06.7, 4th) and Michael Mooney (15:07.9, 5th) also represented the Green and Gold in the top 5. Mooney, who was an all-conference performer in 2022, was running in his first cross country race in over a year after missing the 2023 season due to injury.
Â
Up next for the Rams will divide and conquer at a pair of meets, beginning with the Roy Griak in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 20 followed by the Roadrunners Invitational in Denver the following day.
