FORT COLLINS, Colo. -Â Â The Colorado State cross country team is set to continue the 2017 season this Friday with what will likely be the most competitive meet of the cross country regular season, the ninth-annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis.
Â
Friday's meet includes a wide range of college competition, with women's 6k championship race set for 11:20 p.m. MT/12:20 p.m. CT and the men's 8k championship race set for 12 p.m. MT/1 p.m. CT. "B" races are set to take place for both men and women beforehand, with the women's competition starting at 10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT and the men's race starting at 10:40 a.m. MT/11:40 a.m. CT.
Â
"We're looking forward to taking on some of the best competition in the country and seeing where we fit," Colorado State cross country head coach Art Siemers said. "The team's been training really well since the Roy Griak Invitational and we've made some great strides since then. There's no other meet in the country that has the feel of a national championship-caliber meet. Every team there is a good or great team. It'll a great test for both of our teams."
Â
Colorado State will face a myriad of ranked teams on each of the women's and men's sides. Among the top-ranked women's team that CSU is set to face are No. 3 New Mexico, No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 San Francisco, No. 7 NC State and No. 8 Providence in addition to many others. Highlighting the competition for the 11th-ranked Colorado State men are top-ranked Northern Arizona, No. 3 Syracuse, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Southern Utah and No. 10 Furman. Over 30 teams are entered on each side, and each team must be invited to the meet.
Â
Final results and a full recap will be posted to CSURams.com as soon as each are available following Friday's action. Fans that subscribe to FloTrack.com will be able to watch the race live through the website's live stream.
Â
CSU's No. 11 ranking on the men's side is the program's best in any week in cross country since 2003. The Rams are coming off their first-ever men's team title at the Roy Griak Invitational, as well as the program's third straight men's individual champion. Jerrell Mock repeated as champion, becoming the third repeat champion and first since 2002-03, while CSU became the first team with three individual champions in meet history. Former CSU All-American Jefferson Abbey started that streak in 2015.
Â
"On the men's side, our guys would really like to try to break into the top four on Friday," Siemers said. "We'd have to beat some really highly-ranked teams, but if all goes well we have a shot. Some of our guys were struggling with injuries earlier in the season, but none of them had to miss much training and I think that we've got it all figured out. That could be a difference-maker for us. Our guys have been able to really put it together in training since the Griak."
Â
CSU's women have also made an appearance in the USTFCCCA top 25 this season, receiving votes in the week three poll. The Rams, which earned that recognition with a sixth-place finish at the Griak, had not received votes before that week since 2010. Darby Gilfillan and McKenna Spillar have each been recognized as Mountain West Cross Country Athlete of the Week this season, as the Rams' two women's weekly honors leads the conference.
Â
"On the women's side, it's a really tough field and the first time our women have ever been invited to this meet," Siemers said. "Our women want to have a good showing to prove they belong in the meet and move up into the national rankings."
Â
Rams' Men Ranked 11th for Highest Cross Country Ranking Since 2003
- The Colorado State men's cross country's team has steadily risen up the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) poll all season, reaching a No. 11 ranking in the week four rankings. That is CSU's highest cross country ranking from the USTFCCCA in any week since 2003.

- CSU is currently the highest-ranked men's cross country team in the Mountain West, topping Boise State (No. 15), Air Force (No. 23) and Utah State (No. 27).

- The Colorado State men's cross country team was selected as the favorite to win the 2017 Mountain West title by conference head coaches, while Colorado State's women's team was projected to finish fourth in the 2017 MW Cross Country Preseason Coaches' Poll. Those rankings were released by the conference on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

- The midseason poll was released on Thursday, Oct. 5, with each of the Rams' women and men holding their respective positions from preseason voting. - The Rams return three All-Mountain West performers from the 2016 conference meet, including 2016 runner-up and 2015 MW champion Jerrell Mock, as well as Grant Fischer and Cole Rockhold. Eric Hamer (15th place) and Carson Hume (16th place), who took the next two positions outside of All-Mountain West honors (top 14), also return for 2017. Griak Title Leads to USTFCCCA NCAA Di Men National Athlete of the Week Honor for Mock
- Following his second consecutive individual title at the Roy Griak Invitational, Colorado State senior Jerrell Mock was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Men National Athlete of the Week on Monday, Sept. 25.
- Mock earned the national honor after becoming just the third men's individual in meet history to capture the Griak title in consecutive seasons. The senior is the first to repeat as champion since 2002-03 (BYU's Kip Kangogo).
- With Mock's second Griak crown, Colorado State became the only program in meet history to have the individual men's champion in three straight seasons. Former CSU All-American Jefferson Abbey started that streak with his individual title in 2015.
- Mock led the then-18th-ranked Colorado State men to their first-ever team title at Roy Griak Invitational, as the Rams topped a field that included then-No. 20 UCLA and then-No. 25 Michigan State. The Rams finished with 47 points to top the Spartans (55 points) and the Bruins (63 points).

Rams Make History as Mock, Spillar Earn MW Athlete of the Week Honors

However, in each of those weeks, UNM's men's selection was a co-athlete of the week. The most recent school to sweep MW honors outright was BYU in 2010; no other current conference member has ever swept league honors outright twice in a single cross country season.
