FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Portions of the Colorado State cross country teams will be racing Saturday in the UCCS Open at Monument Valley Park North in Colorado Springs.
The meet kicks off with the Men's 8K at 9 a.m., followed by the Women's 5K at 9:45 a.m. The meet will have no team score but will provide live competition for the Ram runners.
Head Coach Art Siemers
"The ones that are running are going to gain experience and possibly earn a spot for the next race in Wisconsin at Nuttycombe. The race [UCCS Open] is only two hours away, so it isn't going to take them away from school or beat them up too much, because we are going down early in the morning and back afterwards. Racing at altitude is a little slower than racing at sea level [UCCS Open], so they'll be less beat up. Also it is a dirt trail so we'll wear flats instead of spike so that will save their calves too. I saw a shift in practice on Tuesday. We had a hard workout, so I'm intrigued on how well these runners do Saturday. The rest of our team will practice Saturday back in Fort Collins."
Rams Competing
Men: Michael Mooney, Thomas Chaston, Tom Oates, Dawson Besst, Ryan Birkmeier, Andrew Forsyth; Unattached: Calvin Banta, Noah Bodewes, Chris Montross, Lars Mitchel, Preston Norris, Carter Storm

The Course
Monument Valley Park North is located in Colorado Springs and sits 6,100 feet above sea level. The course is a 2,000-meter (2-kilometer) and 3,000-meter (3-kilometer) loop with the start and finish on grass and the other 95% run on a smooth crushed gravel trail that is 6-8 feet wide.

College Men's Course: Two laps of the 3k loop, followed by one lap of the 2k loop.

Although snow came through Colorado on Thursday, the weather will return to a fall feel with temperatures around the low-to-mid 40's with sunny skies at race time.

The course is located in the north section of Monument Valley Park on the east side of I-25. You take the Uintah exit and go East on Uintah for two blocks until you reach Cascade (a stop light) and you turn left (North). There will be a gravel parking lot at the end of Fontanero and you can park there as well as along the streets in the neighborhood. The start and finish areas are only about 50 feet from Culebra street. We will have a section of Culebra street reserved for team parking.
