UCCS Open is this Friday at 5 p.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State Cross Country programs will be taking on their fourth race of the season this Friday at the Cherokee Ridge Golf Course for the UCCS Open in Colorado Springs.
Â
The women will begin their 6,000-meter race at 5 p.m. with the men's team following at 5:40 p.m. in their 8K race. As of week four of the 2021 cross country season, the USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll announced that the women's team is ranked No. 21 nationally. Regionally, the women are fifth in the Mountain, while the men are eighth.
Â
"I think we're going to do some really big things this race even though we are only bringing a part of our team," head coach Art Siemers said. "It will be a good experience for our student-athletes to get in another meet and to show us that all the hard training is paying off."
Â
There will be many NCAA Division II teams running alongside the Rams. For the men, USTFCCCA's Division II nationally ranked No. 1 team Colorado School of Mines and 13th-ranked UCCS will provide tough competition.
Â
"UCCS has a pretty good men's team, and they will be running their whole squad so it will be a good test for our men," Siemers added. "A few of these guys that are racing for us are going to get a chance to have back-to-back weeks and go to Wisconsin, so this race will be a test to see who they are."
Â
Additionally, this race allows some who are coming back from injuries to get more races under their belt like Maximilliano Martinez and Gannon Willcutts.
Â
For the women, the Rams will be up against No. 4 Mines and No. 6 UCCS. The Ram to look out for this race is Sydney Petersen.
Â
"Petersen is going to do really well, she's been training at a really high level," said Siemers. "All together, we have been competing really well over the last month and this is a great experience to give everyone an opportunity race in another meet."
