Colorado State was ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the Pre-Championship Poll
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After four meets during the regular season, the Colorado State cross country program will switch into its postseason mindset as they head to the Mountain West Championship on Friday, hosted by Wyoming. The Rams were voted No. 2 on the women's side and No. 3 on the men's in the Pre-Championship Poll, voted on by the head coaches in the league.
Â
Both teams are also ranked in the latest USTFCCCA National Poll at No. 20 for the women and No. 28 for the men. The two squads were also ranked heading into the 2021 MW Championship – the first since 2003.
Â
Heading into the start the of 2022 slate, the Rams were both picked to finish third.
Â
"It's exciting to see the conference respect what both teams have been doing through the year," said head coach Andrew Epperson. "Having the women move up a spot from the preseason is great and having the men hold at three shows that our competition is Utah State and Air Force. We know what we have to do on Friday to get the job done and keep taking those steps towards a national championship."
Â
Colorado State will have a combined 14 student-athletes, seven on each team, that have experience in a Mountain West Championship from 2021, including Lily Tomasula-Martin returning with All-Conference honors.
Â
"Last year we had three All-Conference runners, two on the women and one on the men," said Epperson. "This year they are looking to up those numbers; that is a big goal for both teams. If we could have three or four on each side, that'd be a really good day and I think we have the tools in place to make that happen. It's going to come down to race day. I'm really confident in our training and really inspired by what they have been able to do in the last eight or nine weeks."
Â
Prior to the 2021 Mountain West Championship, both squads were voted No. 2.
Â
"On the women's side, they were posed to get second and finished third," added Epperson. "So, they know that bad taste in their mouth is still there and to go out and get after that second place and go after New Mexico is something they are looking forward to."
Â
Following the Championship, Colorado State will head to Albuquerque, N.M., for the NCAA Mountain Regional on Friday, Nov. 11.
