Colorado State celebrates three seniors and Hilbert Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On senior day at Moby Arena, and the last regular season home game for Head Coach Tom Hilbert, the Rams got back to their winning ways after dropping three straight conference matches for the first time since 2006 as they beat Air Force, 3-1.
Â
In set one, Ram fans saw recent struggles continue on the home side of the court as the Falcons came out with hard-swinging hits and Colorado State's defense remained unable to stay in-system consistently. Colorado State dropped the first set, their tenth consecutive set loss, 25-16.
Â
After playing in a 5-1 rotation all year, a rotation using only one setter, Hilbert made the call to switch his offense to a 6-2 rotation, entering Barrett Power into the game as a second setter alongside starting setter Ciera Pritchard. With Pritchard and Power now splitting the facilitation load, things started to click again for the Rams.
Â
In set two, the Rams held the Falcons to just a .152 hitting percentage while hitting at a .444 rate themselves. Most importantly, outside hitter Kennedy Stanford got back to her dominant ways with five kills and two solo blocks in the second set alone. Stanford, the undoubted leader of the Rams offense finished the last two games with only 12 kills combined while ending Saturday afternoon with 15 kills total.
Â
Colorado State dominated both set two and three with both sets ending by a score of 25-16 in favor of the Rams.
Â
Sealing the game in the fourth set, the Rams hit a .438 percentage to round out their regular season at home in the win column.
Colorado State finished hitting .324 on the day.
Â
Before the game, Colorado State honored three seniors including outside hitter Jacqi Van Liefde and two student managers, Jonny Carrillo and Julia Encinitas.
Â
But after the game, it was a regular season curtain call for Hilbert. Fans were given small poster-cards that read one simple word on them to hold up after the game, "Tom." As Moby Arena erupted into "Thank You, Tom" chants, the 26-year Head Coach shed a few tears before addressing the crowd, finishing with, "Thank you, Fort Collins." Hilbert will coach in Moby Arena for the final time in two weeks as the Rams host the Mountain West tournament from November 23-25.
Â
The Rams will play their final week of the regular season on the road next week as they travel to Wyoming for a matchup with the Cowgirls on Tuesday and then to UNLV to face the conference leading rebels Saturday afternoon.
